The UK Supermarket Cashback Hack: Save 3-5% on Every Shop
Save 3-5% on every supermarket shop by paying with a discounted gift card. Live rates for Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Waitrose and more.
The Supermarket Cashback Hack, Explained
There’s a way to save 3-5% on your weekly supermarket shop without changing where you shop, what you buy, or what loyalty schemes you use. It’s not couponing. It’s not a discount code. It doesn’t need you to switch to own-brand or hunt yellow stickers.
You buy a digital gift card for your supermarket through a cashback app, then pay with that gift card at the till. The app credits your account with cashback instantly — usually within seconds. You still scan your Clubcard or Nectar card as normal, still earn loyalty points, still pay the same price. The saving comes out of the supermarket’s marketing budget, not yours.
If you spend £80 a week at Tesco, a 4% rate earns you around £165 a year. Most households have 2-3 minutes per shop to spare for that. This is one method among several — my complete cashback guide covers every UK cashback type if you want the full picture, but gift card cashback is the single most effective method for in-store supermarket shops.
- Find your supermarket below — the live table shows every app offering cashback on that gift card, best rate first
- Sign up to the top app (free, takes 2 minutes) — most give you a sign-up bonus on top
- Buy a digital gift card for roughly what you plan to spend — it arrives instantly by email or in-app
- Pay at the till as normal — scan the barcode at self-checkout or hand the code to the cashier. Cashback hits your app balance straight away

What Scrimpr Does
You can save money on your shopping by buying gift cards with cashback. Some providers discount the gift card upfront, others add cashback to your app balance. Either way, Scrimpr compares them all to find you the biggest saving.
How It Works
- Search for the retailer above - Scrimpr shows you which provider has the best gift card cashback
- Sign up to that provider (free) and buy a gift card for the amount you need
- Receive the gift card instantly via email
- Use it in-store or online - your saving is either discounted upfront or added to your balance
Unlike traditional cashback, gift card cashback is simpler - there's no tracking to worry about. You buy the gift card directly through the provider's app and the saving is applied straight away.
Why This Works (and Why Most People Don’t Do It)
Traditional cashback sites like TopCashback and Quidco only work for online purchases. You click a tracking link, wait 30-90 days for the retailer to confirm your purchase, and hope nothing goes wrong in between. For in-store supermarket shops — which is where most of us do the weekly — they’re useless.
Gift card cashback apps sidestep the tracking problem entirely. The apps buy gift cards from supermarkets in bulk at a discount (via providers like Tillo and Blackhawk), then pass most of that discount to you as cashback. Because you’ve already paid, there’s nothing to track — the saving is banked the moment you buy the card.
Most people don’t do this because it sounds too good, feels like it must have a catch, or they don’t know these apps exist. The catch — such as it is — is that you’re pre-paying for your shop. If you lose the gift card or forget to use it, that’s your money gone. But used sensibly (top up what you need, use within a few weeks), it’s one of the most reliable ways to save on groceries in the UK.
How the Best Apps Compare Right Now
Five apps cover most supermarket gift card cashback in the UK: EverUp, JamDoughnut, SuperFi, Complete Savings, and TopCashback’s TopGiftCards. Rates change weekly and no single app leads across every supermarket, which is why comparing before you buy matters.
EverUp tends to lead the headline rates on most big supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons) and runs frequent boosted promos. JamDoughnut is consistent and has the broadest retailer coverage beyond supermarkets. SuperFi is newer but occasionally picks up supermarkets the others don’t, like Aldi. Complete Savings has a monthly subscription fee which eats into the cashback unless you’re shopping heavily. TopGiftCards routes through your TopCashback account, which is handy if you already use TopCashback for online shopping.
Rates in the table above update daily — always check before buying rather than defaulting to whichever app you used last time.
Cashback Rates by Supermarket
Tesco Gift Card Cashback
Tesco is where this hack pays off most for most people — high weekly spend, accepted everywhere, and consistently good rates across multiple apps. The current leader is 4.0% via EverUp, though I’ve seen JamDoughnut beat EverUp during their boosted weeks. Works at every Tesco including Extra, Express, Metro, petrol stations, and online at tesco.com. You still earn Clubcard points — the till sees a normal payment, not a voucher.
Sainsbury’s Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 3.6% via EverUp. Works in-store and online (though online redemption is capped at £250 per transaction and the gift card has to be converted to an online coupon first, which is fiddly). Nectar points still earn as normal. Worth noting: Sainsbury’s gift cards don’t work at their petrol stations, unlike Tesco’s.
Waitrose Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 4.6% via EverUp. Waitrose tends to have the highest headline rates because Waitrose shoppers are a premium demographic and the retailer pays a higher commission. Works in-store and at waitrose.com, including Waitrose Cellar for wine orders. My partnership card still earns as normal.
Asda Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 3.5% via EverUp. Works in-store, online at asda.com, George.com, and at Asda petrol stations. Asda Rewards still earns alongside. One quirk: Asda gift cards can occasionally be refused at smaller Asda Express stores — worth checking locally before loading a big amount.
Morrisons Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 3.5% via EverUp. In-store only — not valid at morrisons.com. Stacks with More Card points. The 12-month expiry from activation is shorter than most supermarkets, so don’t stockpile.
Aldi Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 2.5% via SuperFi. Aldi gift cards come and go — they’re not consistently available because Aldi’s margins are tight. When they appear, grab them. In-store only, no online shop to use them on anyway.
Iceland Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 3.4% via EverUp. Works at Iceland and The Food Warehouse locations. Iceland’s own Bonus Card still earns on top. If you’re a regular Iceland shopper, their own Bonus Card already gives you a form of savings — stacking it with gift card cashback is a rare triple dip.
Farmfoods Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 3.5% via EverUp. In-store only at all Farmfoods locations. Niche but useful if you’re a regular Farmfoods shopper — the rates are surprisingly competitive given the chain’s size.
Lidl Gift Card Cashback
No app currently offers cashback on Lidl gift cards — Lidl doesn’t issue digital gift cards through the usual providers. Lidl Plus (the app) has its own in-app coupons and a “Spend £200 in a month, get £10 back” scheme, which is the closest equivalent. Worth checking back here occasionally — this could change.
McColls Gift Card Cashback
Current best: 2.5% via EverUp. Convenience store rather than full supermarket, but useful for top-up shops. In-store only.
What to Watch Out For
This hack is straightforward but there are genuine downsides worth knowing before you commit.
You lose Section 75 protection. Paying by credit card for goods over £100 gives you legal protection if something goes wrong. Paying by gift card doesn’t — you’re paying cash, essentially. For weekly groceries this rarely matters, but don’t use this hack for a £500 one-off big-ticket buy.
Lost card = lost money. Gift cards aren’t tied to your account. If you lose your phone or the code, there’s no getting it back. Keep balances small and use them within a few weeks.
Returns come back as gift cards. If you return something bought with a gift card, the refund usually goes back onto a gift card, not to your bank. For food shops this is rarely an issue. For electronics or clothing from supermarket departments (Tesco’s F&F, Asda’s George), think twice.
Expiry dates. Most supermarket gift cards last 12-24 months from activation, but some (Morrisons) are shorter. Buy what you’ll use, not what feels like a good stockpile.
Retailer collapse. If a retailer goes bust, gift card balances usually become worthless — you’re an unsecured creditor. Unlikely with the big supermarkets, but it’s happened with others (Carpetright, Wilko). Another reason not to load up huge balances.
Can’t usually buy gift cards with Amex. Most of these apps don’t accept American Express. If you normally get 1% on everything via Amex, that’s a small opportunity cost — though the 3-5% cashback more than covers it.
Stacking With Everything Else
The real value of this hack compounds when you stack it with other savings methods. The gift card discount is the foundation; everything else layers on top. The full cashback stacking guide walks through the order to combine everything properly — but here are the quick wins.
Loyalty points. Always. Clubcard, Nectar, More Card, Asda Rewards, Morrisons More — none of them care how you pay. The till sees a card-type transaction and credits points as normal.
Cashback debit or credit card. Pay for the gift card itself with a cashback debit card (Chase gives 1% on everyday spend, for example), and you double-dip: cashback on the gift card purchase, plus the gift card discount on your actual shop.
Receipt scanning apps. Apps like Shopmium, CheckoutSmart and GreenJinn pay cashback on specific branded products regardless of how you paid. Your gift card payment at the till doesn’t disqualify the receipt. See the receipt scanning apps comparison for which ones cover which supermarkets.
Supermarket-specific app offers. Tesco Clubcard Challenges, Sainsbury’s Nectar Prices, Asda Rewards “Star Products”, Lidl Plus coupons — all still work when you pay by gift card.
Common Questions
Does paying with a gift card affect my Clubcard or Nectar points?
No. Loyalty schemes track what you buy, not how you pay. Scan your Clubcard or Nectar card first, then pay with the gift card — points earn as normal.
What if I don’t spend the full gift card amount in one shop?
The remaining balance stays on the gift card for next time. Most supermarket gift cards last 1-5 years from activation, though Morrisons is shorter at 12 months. Check the balance in the app before each shop.
Can I use multiple gift cards in one transaction?
Yes at most supermarkets — scan them one after another at the till or self-checkout. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons all handle multiple gift cards in a single transaction.
Is there a minimum or maximum amount I can load?
Typically £5-£500 per gift card, depending on the app and supermarket. Buy what you’ll spend in the next few weeks — loading large balances is riskier if you lose access.
Is this too good to be true?
No catch. The apps buy gift cards at wholesale discount (supermarkets pay commission for the marketing/distribution) and pass most of that discount to you. The business model has existed for years and the apps are FCA-regulated where required.
What’s the difference between EverUp, JamDoughnut and SuperFi?
Mostly the rates, the cash-out minimums, and the extras. EverUp has mini-games; JamDoughnut has a livestream giveaway; SuperFi is focused on rate competitiveness. All three payout via bank transfer. The table at the top shows current rates — pick whichever leads for your supermarket today.
Does this work with the big weekly delivery shops?
Yes for Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Waitrose — their gift cards work online as well as in-store. Morrisons and Aldi gift cards are in-store only.
Can I get cashback on Lidl groceries?
Not through gift cards (Lidl doesn’t issue them through the usual providers). Lidl Plus has its own app-based offers and a monthly spend bonus, which is the closest equivalent.
What about online cashback sites like TopCashback?
They still have their place — just not for in-store supermarket shopping. For online purchases at non-supermarket retailers, sites like TopCashback and Quidco are the better option. Use whichever tool fits the purchase — gift card cashback for in-store groceries, traditional cashback sites for online shopping elsewhere.
